Rationale: The
increasing importance of sports in society and the educational, social and
cultural roles they play, as well as the reputation that international
competitions enjoy, have attracted the attention of public authorities. The
acceptance that sports have a positive impact on society has led to sports
being evaluated as a public service for the public good. Along with the
globalization experienced in the world, some developments in public
administration are also reflected in the administrative structure of sports. In
the globalization process, almost all public services have become
commercialized, opened to internationalization and privatized, and the
regulatory role of the state has been emphasized as the basic characteristics
of the restructuring in public administration. Sports are among the elements
that the state cannot give up or leave to chance. Because raising a healthy
society in terms of body, mind and spirit is the fundamental
are among their duties. Therefore, the structural
organizations of physical education and sports in countries, their management
approaches and ways of participating in management are important in terms of
sports management. In fact, sports cannot be managed and developed without the
material and moral support of the state. In this context, in the “National
Youth and Sports Policy Document” prepared by the Ministry of Youth and Sports
within the framework of “Establishment of Turkish Sports Policy within the
European Union Integration Process” and decided by the Council of Ministers
with the date 26/11/2012 and number 2012/4242, the first of the 7 basic policy
areas was determined as “Sports Management” and it was emphasized that in order
to establish an effective and good sports management, contemporary management
principles should be adopted and a functional organization model that will
cover all processes of sports should be developed. In this document, it was
also determined as a target to increase the employment of candidates who
graduated from physical education and sports colleges sports management
departments of universities in all institutions and organizations related to
sports and in the private sector for an effective sports management.
With the establishment of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in our country
in 2011, projects, programs and investments in the field of Youth and Sports
have increased and the services carried out by the ministry in the central and
provincial organizations have improved in terms of quality and quantity. In
addition, the interest in sports investments in the private sector (investors,
sports companies, clubs, associations) and the increase in the number of sports
organizations have caused an employment gap in this field. In this context, the
students' preference for the Sports Management department will continue due to
the opportunities created for the employment of sports management
professionals. In addition, sports and the fields that form the sports sector
(sports entrepreneurship, recreation services, sports organization consultancy,
etc.) in the world and in our country constitute important sources of income
and the popularity of the Sports Management profession is increasing day by
day. In this context, the continuity of the student source in the program will
continue. When individuals who want to study finish the relevant secondary
education institutions, anyone who graduates from any secondary education
institution can choose the program to continue their education with a TYT
score.
Finally, when we look at the country as a whole, Turkey is the country that
invests the most in sports in the world, including countries that organize the
Olympics. The goal is for every province and district to have the optimum
sports facility. The priority of the Ministry of Youth and Sports is pools,
athletics tracks and multi-purpose sports halls. In this context, 213 sports
facilities were opened to service throughout the country in 2013 alone, and the
construction of 789 sports investments continues. In addition, the work to
establish 12 “Turkish Olympic Preparation Centers” throughout Turkey is nearing
completion as of today. When evaluated as a whole, Turkey is implementing
revolutionary reforms in sports.
In this context, we predict that these investments will require a
significant need for and employment in “professional management in sports” from
today onwards.
Students who graduate from this program have the opportunity to work in the private and public sectors. In addition, they can be employed in sports clubs and Youth and Sports Directorates, and they can work in marketing, public relations, human resources, finance, management, sponsorship and event management departments. Apart from these, graduates who have entrepreneurial spirit and potential in line with the information they receive can establish their own businesses in all areas related to sports management and fill the gap in the field.
